About the Make Beautiful Tribe Gathering:

The Make Beautiful Tribe has been providing weekend retreats for over 25 years at Tanglewood 4-H Camp in Lincolnville, Maine.  The weekend offers the opportunity to live in an intentional gay male community produced by and for participants to celebrate our unique wisdom and diversity.  It’s an event for men to get to know each other, build community, hang out, network, and explore being gay or bisexual in a safe space.

Our gathering weekend format is open, which means you pick and choose what you would like to do – attend a workshop, go for a hike, play cards, or just sit by a roaring fire in the main lodge.  We just ask that all the participants attend opening and closing circles, and to try to be at meals on time.  The rest is up to you.  We also have a dance and talent show on Saturday evening.  If the weekend falls on Halloween, there will be a costume contest with prizes awarded.  So, we invite you to come sing, perform, dance, lip-synch, read poetry, tell stories.  Just come perform and show off!  Enjoy celebrating our diversity.  Bring your own costumes, accessories, and music.  Since a dance follows the talent show, bring along any music you like to dance to, as well.

Situated in a wooded rustic setting, the Tanglewood 4-H Camp in Lincolnville provides a wonderful place for us to hold our gathering.  The lodge we utilize as our gathering place is a “great room” with a rustic fieldstone fireplace and a modern restaurant kitchen off to one side.  There are various large and small cabins throughout the campgrounds, numbering more than a dozen.  There is even a wood-fired sauna available for relaxation, along with acres of wooded trails for hiking.  There is much more to do besides the workshops that the weekend offers.

Participants create this retreat.  It wouldn’t exist without the working participation of all of us.  On arrival we ask everyone to sign up to help with chores.  The Make Beautiful Tribe operates as a not-for-profit entity, and the retreat is produced with unpaid volunteers only, in an effort to keep the weekend affordable for all.  Meals are created fresh and are extraordinarily tasty!  Most of the guys find kitchen duty the most fun, and a great way to meet and work with each other.

Men who attend may range in age from 18-95 years old and come from all walks of life.  The different workshops offered at each retreat are led by participants.  These workshops provide a chance to share, laugh, cry, dialogue, and/or relax.  Some workshops are planned in advance and may be offered at each retreat.  In addition to these offerings, you are invited to share a particular expertise or interest by offering to facilitate your own workshop!

Please note that enrollment for this retreat may fill quickly, and you must pre-register to attend (see registration form above).  Your fee for the weekend is expected with your registration form.  By the way, scholarships may be available, as we try not to turn anyone away for lack of funds.  All registrants must pay at least a $30.00 non-refundable deposit to reserve a space.  Refunds, minus the $30.00 deposit will be honored as long as you cancel by Monday, prior to the weekend itself.  Please don’t embarrass yourself or us by showing up if you haven’t registered.  You will be turned away.

The retreat is not intended to be a sexual weekend although we recognize that we are all sexual beings.  We encourage all interactions to be respectful, honoring of each individual’s boundaries.

Under state law, the camp is an alcohol- and chemical-free space.  Pets are not allowed.  This is enforced!
